Lughnasa celebrates the beginning of autumn, the beginning of the harvest season, and the turning of summer into winter. According to ancient Celtic mythology, the festival lasts for a month and begins on August 1st, but today it is celebrated on a nearby Sunday. The name Lughnasa is derived from Lug. The festival revolves around the warrior god Lug, one of the central characters in ancient Celtic mythology. Lug's mother died after clearing the plains of Ireland for agriculture. The Celts believed that the ceremony was started to commemorate her death.

During the Lughnasa period, the Celts did everything they could to please Lug. They would hold a big party and pay homage to him. If he was pleased with those treats, he would give them a great harvest. Due to Lug's great talent in the arts - dance, music, art, and poetry were the main elements of the festival. Lughnasa's modern day is known as "Reek Sunday" when the Celts climb the mountain to pay their respects to Lug. This tradition was renewed with the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and with the advent of Christianity it became Lammas. The last Sunday in July, thousands of Christians and climbers alike climbed the rocky Croagh Patrick in Mayo. Another name for the mountain is "Reek", hence the name "Reek Sunday."
